Palestinian Gunman Opens Fire in Jewish Settlement
Thu Jun 20, 2:49 PM ET

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - At least one Palestinian gunman infiltrated a Jewish settlement in the northern West Bank on Thursday and opened fire, critically wounding at least one person, Israeli security sources said.

"There is an infiltration in the settlement of Itamar," the source said. "At least one Israeli is critically wounded."

Israeli Channel One television said preliminary reports from the settlement indicated that two gunmen had entered one of the houses and was holed up inside.

Now, if we were to transplant that story into an American context, it might read like this:

Sioux Gunman Opens Fire in Rapid City Subdivision
Thu Jun 20, 2:49 PM ET

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - At least one Sioux gunman infiltrated a subdivision in Rapid City, South Dakota on Thursday and opened fire, critically wounding at least one person, South Dakota State Police sources said.

"There is an infiltration in the Whispering Willows subdivision in Rapid City," the source said. "At least one American is critically wounded."

ABC and CNN, along with WRCD-TV in Rapid City, said preliminary reports from the subdivision indicated that two gunmen had entered one of the houses and were holed up inside with a soccer mom and her two young children.

****************

The Sioux gunman's motivation, if that were to happen, would be that his "Nation's" land had been taken by a white majority of the same race (and maybe the same religion) as the residents of the subdivision. Some argue to this day that the taking of the Sioux land was contrary to law and fairness. Others claim it was manifest destiny or at least justified in some sense. Most people really have no idea whether it was right or wrong.

So should the fictional "gunman's" actions be treated the same as the real gunman's actions in the West Bank today?

You said....." I have not gotten a good answer from anyone to the question of what the Palestinians should do."....

What they should have done years ago. First get rid of arafat and any other known terrorist...Put away all the guns and bombs and work out a peace deal with Israel. If they do this they would likely have the support of most of the world. Simple, common sense.

Oh yes, and try to figure out how to turn off the religious hatred.

The best thing the Palestinians could do would be to adopt non-violent methods - like the American civil rights movement. They would win massive public support from the whole world including from a large segment of the Israeli population. There are lots of powerful forces in the world who would like to see the conflict end in a non-violent peaceful settlement. I think the majority of the Israeli population would love to make peace if they thought it wouldn't bring their destruction.

If non-violence can't be adopted, the next best thing would be to place some sort of restrictions on the violence resistance - restricting it to one side of the green line for example or restricting it to military targets, which are plentiful.

It's well-known that the purpose of the terrorist attacks is to prevent a peaceful solution - the folks behind it say so explicity.
