More thoughts about Indo-Pakistan. I recognize this is OT for the thread but interesting anyway.

India threatened nuclear war (i.e. that is they threatened nuclear annihilation of tens of millions of people) over terrorist attacks on Indian (including occupied Kashmir) targets launched from or supported by groups in Pakistan. The threat worked, at least in the short term. Mushareff backed down and apparently has at least reduced incursions into Indian controlled territory. Should one breathe a sigh of relief and conclude the situation is contained or controlled?

The basic dispute is not resolved. There will undoubtedly be violence in the future. And having been to the brink before, Indian leaders will go there with much less reluctance the next time. Eventually, a miscalculation will occur and the nuclear bluff will be called. Once the warhead exchange begins it will continue until neither side is able to continue. The casulty estimates published recently are likely to be on the low side.

Depressing to think about but this is what I think will happen some years down the line.

And why did Pakistan listen to what the US had to say? Would Pakistan back off to satisfy US demands if they perceived US as backing the Indians? Surely not. Instead because of US's neutral role, they succeeded in getting Pakistan as well as India to back off. Do you think that they should adopt the same approach in the Israeli/Palestenian conflict?
