Is there a point to all this? If so, what is it?

There was a disagreement. It's history. Let it go.

The refereeing has been lousy throughout the tournament, and a lot of teams have suffered: Brazil, for one, lost a key player during a key stage of a quarterfinal match, and will be without that player for the semifinal. I've seen a number of very shaky offside calls, many in critical situations. Team USA was deprived of a clearly warranted penalty kick, later acknowledged by the spiritual leader of the opposing side, while down 1-0 in the second half of their quarterfinal.

The officiating has been lousy, and a lot of teams have felt the consequences. I don't see any reason to think that any one team or any group of teams has been singled out, though. though. There was one bad decision - to bring in officials from all over the world, focusing on diversity rather than competence - and the tournament has suffered. It has nothing to do with hatred or conspiracy.
