Not only was the volume heavy on 8 Oct, but the difference
between the high and low price during the day was also very
large as shown below.

But the VIX high of 57 occurred on the 5th trading day after 911 - quite a delay and not what I would have expected.

This time we've had a more gradual decline. I'd expect VIX to peak at less than 57.
