First of all, Sharon's visit came on the heels of intense Israeli/U.S. pressure on Arafat to sign away the Palestinians' rights to Jerusalem. Sending Sharon (with his rich history of massacring Palestinian civilians) to the Temple Mount with 1000 armed troops was a message:

"If you don't give us this property, we will take it by force."

This was in the tradition of The Godfather - an "offer you can't refuse" - a pen in your hand and a gun at your head.

Secondly, this is not what started the Intifada. It was the next day, when the troops hung around and snipers started firing into the Arab crowds, that the Intifada was born.
