RE:"Isn't it still on for the end of the year? I don't believe Intel has officially backed off from previous statements that 3GHz would be attainable before the end of this year. They released a 2.53GHz part ahead of schedule, and I'd say that's a good indication that their process is capable of going the extra mile."

I think 2.8 is on for the end of the year. I bet they will paper launch 3.0 if they need too. Heck, if Hammer doesn't come out this year, Intel won't need much over 2.53.

But Intel is running into another problem called a "slow market". Looking in the Sunday paper I couldn't find a PC with more than a 2.0 HZ P4 in it. Lots of low end stuff...Celeron 1.2s 1.4s...Durons, no Athlons over 1900+. Lots or e-machines etc. Sure looks like retailers can't push chips over 2.0 very well. Probably why Intel is out of Celerons and their margins have dropped to 49%.
Intel may be in a better position than AMD as far as Mhz but if this keeps up they will have to tighten their belts too.

Let me also answer Hmaly about Mhz becoming less and less the standard for rating chip speed, going forward. At least tha's his hypothesis.
He may be right but the only company that effectively do this is Intel. And why would they want to? Well, if they want to sell itaniums they will have to convince people that Mhz doesn't matter but that's a whole 'nother set of buyers.

So going forward...sure looks like Mhz will still matter.
We also know the Hammer will be a Mhz loser from day one...and the PR rating is not as easy a sell...so there is a handicap unlike Athlon.
