Soccer in America ...... and the future Not only are soccer moms the support to soccer but also the youth programs, the coaching structure and quality coaches that are beginning to emerge. Last year I passed the 40 hour course for the National "D" coaching license. (not a big deal, but I needed it to run the youth summer soccer camps) They go from Youth Module (formerly F) to E - D - C - B - A. (I learned that the coaching program in the USA was designed by German Coach Detmar Cramer.) There were many quality individuals who attended the course and as Detmar Cramer recently observed "the USA appears to be at the forefront of committed quality youth coaches." The trainers, for the most part were excellent. If any negative, it was that they were somewhat mechanical because they had limited soccer experience in their youth. It also taught me how I can, in a structured format, transmit to the youth what I have learned in almost 40 years of soccer. My oldest (12) boy's soccer coach ("B" license) is going for his "A" license. There are relatively few in the USA who have this. As an assistant coach I have had the opportunity to participate with a very good coach. The club has had some excellent seasons, yet he emphasizes development over winning. This will pay off in the long run. Although, there still are many overly competitive American youth coaches who place winning at a higher priority than development, I have been astonished to see so many quality youth coaches and structured programs that will surely benefit the soccer development in the USA. If the parents can control their insatiable desire to win at all costs and stop putting so much pressure on these young players and if soccer overcomes the hurdle of the other major sports, there is a real bright future for the sport in the USA. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since I am not so optimistic that Germany will go to the final, I will also assume that Brazil has an excellent chance for The Cup. Loki My boys had an excellent training yesterday....the younger brother (10) played well with the 12 year old kids. Two years ago I took them to Germany where they spent one week at an overnight soccer camp run by former international star Dieter Müller. It helped their confidence tremendously. They were the youngest but as Dieter Müller pointed out about, "ze Amerikan guys" (as he called them) ... "the German Boys can also learn something from them". (Actually the boys have dual citizenship)
