I guess this is one possible motivation for the actions taken. The 2001 annual report says that WCOM paid $965M in US income taxes. They must have paid some for first quarter 2002. This could add up to over $1B if they actually lost money during these periods. This is real cash - no strings attached. Hmmmmm...ballsey move I like it!!
