McCarthy recognized a very real problem, but was over zealous. There is no question that the US overstepped its Constitutional authority regarding censorship and elsewhere. He was a man who was the product of the cold war and he was not alone. Excesses though have been laid almost solely at McCarthy's feet. The man has been demonized since to the point that any reasonable evaluation of McCarty today is near impossible.
