"God" happened to be the common term used by the people who founded THIS country.

The words "under God" were not inserted into the Pledge by the people who founded this country. They were inserted much later, at the height of the red-scare paranoia of the '50s, a time when many extremists believed that to be un-Godly was un-American. The insertion of the words into the pledge was an effort to impose this bias on the culture as a whole.

Is this really a legacy that we want to perpetuate?
