re: Any interest rate increases would actually help companies like QUALCOMM which have little or no debt.

You are forgetting the inconvenient fact that Qualcomm's customers have a lot of debt. Telco capex budgets were getting slashed even before WCOM did it's best Enron imitation. The easiest way to improve cash flow is to cut capex, and improving cash flow is what everyone is now focussing on. Rising interest rates means the fabled wireless data tornado for Qualcomm gets pushed out (further) into the indefinite future. If you want to know what the future holds for Qualcomm, watch what's happening to their customers. It's hard to prosper when your customer base is on the edge of bankrupcy. And rising interest rates are exactly the thing that will push many struggling telcos (big and small) into insolvency, by making it impossible to service their debts or rolling over ST debt.

in addition to the point which Jacob raised, i would mention that rate increases make extremely expensive companies like QCOM less attractive compared to income investments.
