Pearly:

I still do minimum 150,000 to 200,000 km per annum. Use a VW Golf diesel. Mileage is remarkable and operating costs all up are very reasonable. Hardly ever requires maintenance. Past examples that I have owned have gone 400,000 km with very few problems. Cheaper than shoe leather from my perspective.

Fuel over here is a bargain compared with any part of the UK or Europe. That does re-shape the equation. And when you get 1000 to 1100 km per tank, it simply doesn't strain the bank account.

I totally agree with the commuting ugliness around large cities. Downtown Toronto is 55 minutes away in non-rush hour and 2 plus hours during peak useage hours.

I have always loved the total freedom that an auto provides, especially in our part of the world where the distances between centres are consequentially greater than in Europe It isn't cheap, but it's well worth it to me.

Best, Earlie
