OK, Grumpy
When I saw that, I was SURE the post was directed to me. :-)

so you don't think it's even theoretically possible to set up a system to deal with crime centered on something other than retribution.
People can and do change. But not because and when the State wants them to. Retribrutation is at least reliable- -you actually can inflict the punishment promised.

So what do you think about parole for Leslie Van Houten?
Being weak-willed seems a rather strange argument for avoiding the consequences of ones behavior.

stabbing Rosemary La Bianca “in the lower torso … approximately 14 to 16 times” as she lay on the floor of her bedroom, either dying or already dead.
So just exactly what does she have to do get life w/o parole? Or the DP?

Not if you are going to keep alive the idea of responsibility, that we should distinguish between merely accidental or negligent behaviour, and criminal behaviour. If we sustain the idea of responsibility, then there is guilt, and it has to be expiated somehow.

I am not tracking on the parole issue. I will see if something occurs to me.......

Reviewing the particulars, as given in the MSNBC story, I would be ambivalent. Her age at the time, the dominance exerted by Manson, her energy in trying to turn her life around, argue for parole. On the other hand, the sheer hideousness of the crime, and the fact that even a whacked- out 19 year old should be able to appreciate its savage cruelty, argues in favor of making her pay more. I therefore do not know, without more detail and/or rumination, what I would do if I were to make the decision.......

From what I've heard I don't see any problem cutting her loose. I would stipulate at least 6 months in a halfway house to get her used to the changes in society though.
