The issue was decided by the USSC in 1943:

I guess the people who ran the schools I attended - by no means out in the boondocks - didn't know that. We knew nothing of any court decision. You recited the pledge and that was that. Maybe if someone had made an issue of it the school would have backed down. Nobody did. They wouldn't dare.

We were red-blooded American boys back then. We said the Pledge. We knew that the US Government was the good guy, always and everywhere. We trusted the cops. We played cowboy, and shot mythical Indians. We played soldier, and shot mythical Vietcong. We stomped kids we called "fags", even before we knew what a fag was.

Those were the good old days....
