I missed that by two years (when I played in school)... the older team --by two years... got to play a number of games with these magicians... Still, I watched from the sidelines and it was a great experience. btw... once, playing in a team made up of the best players of the league, I played for many years, we were given the same colors of the German national team (black shorts and white jersey with black highlights, a very elegant uniform). We went on to play in a national tournament. During the practice rounds, we played a bunch of priests-to-be from the Jesuit seminar, we exchanged home and away games, spliting victories and to their credit (very good players and incredibly fit --I wonder why--NOT -lol) The only team that beat us during the prep up season. I suppose, in an act of poetic [in]justice -g... On a tackle, I injured my wrist in the game we lost, an injury that has haunted me to this day, with no remedy possible. Unless major surgery is done... in which case, the gravy would become more expensive than the meatballs so why bother, I can function quite well... just painful at times. This has fascinated me as much as the game itself. And was a great education on international relations which I used later in business. Sports have been in my family for three generations and have represented at international level in different disciplines... (working to expand on the third generation now...) --but that's another story... The point is that nothing that I can compare to sports, comes even close to unite the various people of our world so strongly and allows us all to open up like old friends under the healthy spirit of competition. As you point out it is truly fascinating and educational to see people who on the surface may seem different due to specific characteristics, yet discover that we are the exact same human beings with the same desires, passions, good will and even faults as one's own. After living such camaraderie and friendship, indeed the whole experience allows me to say that I simply cannot buy the bs politicians and fanatics want the majority to believe that ONE specific set of people are so different and special from the next, just because they live in a specific geographical area... or happen to wear specific colors on a jersey. Which... follows that while yes... the world cup is no question important (and even to say that in some countries is MORE important than in others...), there is an unwritten law of common sense that tells us all (well, most of us at least), that there is no justification to act like a jackass just because one specific year, a specific team happened to play... well... like jackasses -lol [or use the excuse of the already historically-guilty-by-default-referee --lol sorry George-- to become a jackass too]
