DAILY WRAP-UP
************************************
Stocks dropped to levels not seen since 1998 as news of
more major accounting irregularities continued to erode
investors' already sagging confidence.

"It's a bad scene. They've undermined the confidence in this
marketplace," said Joe Liro, an equity strategist with Stone
& McCarthy Research Associates.

"How can you believe anybody's reports when you have a
couple dozen companies being forced to, as we say here,
restate earnings, which means lower earnings, because of
fraudulent accounting?"

Vivendi (NYSE: V) joined the list of major companies to
announce accounting woes. Its shares sank by as much as
40% in Paris on Tuesday before ending with a 30% fall, and
trading was suspended four times. Vivendi lost $4.69, or
21%, to $17.76 on 7.9 million shares traded.

Paris' Le Monde newspaper said Vivendi tried in October,
2001, to avoid booking a euro1.5 billion ($1.35 billion) loan
transaction that resulted from a deal involving the sale of
BskyB shares. Including the figure would have pushed
group results into the red for the first time and increased its
debt, Le Monde said.

European markets are reacting in the same way as their
North American counterparts to accounting issues.

Today the Standard & Poor's 500 Index lost 20.56 points, or
2.12%, to 948.09, its lowest level since Jan. 12, 1998, when
the index closed at 939.21. The Dow Jones Industrial
Average fell 102.04 points, or 1.12%, at 9,007.75. The
Nasdaq dropped 45.95 points, or 3.27%, at 1,357.85 led by
semiconductors and chip makers.

Intel Corp., (NASDAQ: INTC) the largest maker of
semiconductors fell 97 cents, or 5.5% to $16.57. National
Semiconductor Corp. (NYE: NSM) slid $4.58, or 17%, to
$22.75 after it had its rating slashed by Salomon Smith
Barney to "neutral" from "buy." Electronic Data Systems
Corp. (NYE: EDS) fell 33 cents to $30.12 after the world's
second-biggest computer-services company said it will cut
2,000 jobs this week.

Meanwhile, Irish drugmaker Elan (NYSE: ELN) dropped
$3.26, 05 66%, to $1.65 after Standard & Poor's said it may
lower its corporate credit rating on the company. Elan
recently said generic competition was having an impact on
its sales.

In small cap trading, the S&P 600 Index was down 7.36
points, or 3.26%, at 218.26, and the Russell 2000 Index was
down 14.89 points, or 3.33%, at 432.84.

Smallcap movers included Anadigics Inc. (NASDAQ: ANAD)
which lost $2.03, or 28.2%, to $5.24 on 4.27 million shares
traded. The company said in a press release that its third
quarter loss would be wider than analysts had been
forecasting. The company reiterated that its second-quarter
loss would be 29 cents a share but added that its
third-quarter loss would be about 33 cents a share. Analysts
polled by First Call had been looking for a second-quarter
loss of 29 cents and a third-quarter loss of 22 cents a
share. The sequential decline reflects across-the-board
softness in the older TDMA handset market and some
seasonal factors, the company said.

First Horizon Pharmaceutical Inc. (NASDAQ: FHRX) also fell,
losing $14.76, or 81%, to $3.51 on 16 million shares traded.
Slumping sales for two key products will drop second
quarter earnings well below analyst forecasts. The
Alpharetta, Ga., firm said sales of its Tanafed Suspension
pediatric liquid cold and allergy product, and of its Prenate
GT prescription pre-natal vitamin product were hurt by
competition from knock-off products. Excluding items, First
Horizons now sees second quarter results between
break-even and a profit of 2 cents a share, on revenue of
$25 to $26 million. Analysts polled by Thomson
Financial/First Call are currently looking for a profit of 8 cents
a share.

Quanta Services Inc. (NYSE: PWR) lost $6.22, or 68%, to
$2.92 on 5.1 million shares traded. The provider of
contracted network infrastructure maintenance services
says second quarter earnings will fall well below previous
expectations. Losse, excluding items, will now be 3 to 5
cents a share for the second quarter, and 45 to 55 cents a
share for the full year. Wall Street's consensus estimate
was for a profit of 19 cents and 94 cents per share,
respectively.

In Canadian trading, the Toronto Stock Exchange S&P/TSX
Composite Index was down 1.85 points at 7013.39, while
the S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index fell 8.02 points, or
0.69%, to 1150.90.
In commodities trading on the New York Mercantile
Exchange, August crude oil was down 4 cents at $26.77,
and August natural gas was down 5 cents at $3.192. August
gold was down 5 cents at $314.50.

The Canadian dollar was trading at US$0.6549.

Overseas markets were mostly lower. London's FTSE 100
was losing 3% at 4547, and Germany's Xetra DAX was
down 4.5% at 4170. Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 0.3% to
10,622, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng closed down 1% to
10,492.
