There is no mention of God in the constitution. I think you can take that as a hint. The Amendments, as you know, were critical in the opinions of our founding fathers. And of course it is obvious when you read any of their writings that they were rabid radicals regarding the separation of church and state. Today they would probably be more radical than either you or I. They had great scope of imagination to see things not as they were, and not as the majority might want them at that time, but as they could be. There are few people now with vision like that.
