As to Pilger, he has had an audience since 911, and probably long before. Try signing onto some Islamic discussion groups on Yahoo, (the Pakistani-oriented ones are about the only ones in English), and you'll find that Pilger is WORSHIPPED there -- his every musing reposted ad nauseum, (and always from the big British papers).

As to Europes views of us, don't let yourself be fooled into thinking that it is our views on various issues, or our military might, which makes them feel threatened, because it's not.

It's our success, and their inability to deal with their jealousy of that success, that causes the problems. In Europe, they are too arrogant to admit their jealousy, so they criticize our hangnails yet ignore their own gangrenous feet.

Consider a couple other regions, and their differing reactions to us:

In the greater Middle East, (by that I mean the Arab countries plus the predominently Muslim countries of northern Africa and south Asia), the despots who run those countries use their people's jealousy of the U.S. to stay in power. Specifically, the people have been brain washed by their own governments to transfer the anger and hatred which naturally results from their sorry lot in life, from its proper target, i.e., their own governments, onto the U.S.

In (much of) Asia, by contrast, they deal with the jealousy by trying to become more successful, like us. This is why Taiwan, which in 1950 had a GDP roughly on par with Egypt, (I think Egypt, but I cannot swear to it), now has a greater GDP than all the Arab countries combined.

Of course we are going to be isolated in the world, just as Winston Churchill warned us we would back in the late 1940's. We are the Super Power, and our system works better than any other.

Kissing Europe's fat, bloated, pimply a$$ will not change that.

yes, TMan, the Soviet downfall changed the world
it has had very little good consequences
sure, end of Cold War, or is it?
the oldline Soviet Communists are STILL THERE
the old KGB guys are STILL THERE
in fact, their leader Putin is now President of Russia !!!
I dont trust ANYONE from the old KGB, incl Putin
I expect the US and Bush will be betrayed by Russia
maybe not at hands of Putin, but by Russia
right now, Russia's Old Guard is attending NATO security meetings
they are receiving valuable critical security data
I dont like it one bit

the fall of Soviet Union crippled Germany, perhaps permanently
they adopted the East Germans, and become the rich uncle to Poland, Czech, and Hungary
their financial health has not recovered since
they have been mired in a recession of sorts for several years
their unemployment is near 10%

the fall of Soviet Union resulted in the USDollar bubble
with the DMark gone, and the Euro not yet blessed, the US$ ruled
but it ruled with far too much power, with no rival
now we are seeing the horrific consequences
the pain and extreme cost of the unwinding USdollar will be seen for about 2-3 more years
we dont like its early pain after only 2-3 months
wait until next year
the press calls it good for US exporters
I say that is the ONLY POSITIVE among 20 dollar decline effects

the fall of Soviets put the USA into false sense of security
meanwhile as we dismantled our CIA and FBI, the Islamic threat rose
Clinton cut back severely on all security investments and resources

the irony is that few realize Osama's boys might still be on the CIA payroll even as we chase them down
the CIA role before, during, and now is unclear
my guess is the CIA is involved in Afghany heroin trade
