Dennis, Clarence Bass, in his book, "Challenge Yourself," preached the benefits of good fat. The most obvious are salmon, herring and sardines, which are extraordinarily good for the heart. I do think the idea that we didn't eat sugars is wrong as I can't imagine many starving cavemen who would walk pass a blackberry bush and say, "nah!"

However, I still have doubts about all the hormone, nitrate and fat marbled items Atkins' dieters eat. The meat our ancestors ate was running away and probably pretty lean. We eat meat that spends its life in stalls and overeats steroid and hormone juiced foods to increase its fat content. I don't believe those two things are comparable.

The pasta is good campaign has always seemed suspicious to me.

Thanks for the link, Dennis. As you know, I have more than a passing interest in the subject ;-)

I seem to remember reading somewhere, though, that intake of carbohydrates was very high around the turn of the last century (when much of the population was still living on farms), although I am sure that I could be wrong.

Paleolithic Diet vs. Vegetarianism:
What was humanity's original, natural diet?
beyondveg.com

Dennis, the above is a rather heavy-duty site so I'd save it for the weekend. It really gets into the debate about humanity's natural diet.

dennis, check out the zone diet on the net - lots of links out there. it has worked great for me.

it is about eating moderate levels of protein, moderate levels of monounsaturated fat and moderate levels of carbohydrates. it is not about gluttony.

carbs are good - but they become bad when abused. like everything else in life.

i'm down 12 pounds since january this year and i'm never hungry and have good energy in a stressful world.

i feel like crap when i eat out of the zone.
