Goes to show how balance sheets are so important.

Sure. No disagreements. But I was implying something else.

But I think the incumbent ILECs are the mafia that were relied
on to play nice while competing CLECs play catchup. Talk about
fox guarding the henhouse. The ILEC-competitors (CLECs or not)
did not stand a chance.
Now that is being put out as something that does not work and
hence an implication that rules should be changed so that the
field is clear and without competition to ILEC and baby bells.

*Strict and Coercive* regulation of existing monopolies
(not "boys, please play nice") is as important to introducing
meaningful viable competition as balance sheets or anything
else that enforces transparency.
