J_F_Shepard, at the very least, I want the Pledge to reflect the philosophy that America answers to a higher moral authority. That's where our rights come from, as stated in the Declaration of Independence. Not from a king, not from a government, and not even from a Constitution. They come from a Creator. Without that foundation, I believe our rights are vulnerable to any strongman who holds more secular power than anyone else.

I don't know how many states require the Pledge. I do know that no state forces anyone to say the Pledge, even when the school leads in its recitation.
