Here is a tough one, Nadine. I can understand the position Israel will take here, but they will really catch hell about it.

I agree, aside from anything else, it's idiotic to have this argument now, they should just accept the AG's ruling. The Israeli Arabs have been keeping quiet, in whose interest is it to give them fresh grievances?

As an aside, it's a capital crime in the PA to sell land to Jews, but what the heck, no one expects anything different from Arabs.

Here is a tough one

I dont think that this is a tough one. What possible justification does Israel have for treating it's Arab citizens as second-class? If they are willing to do this to their own citizens, how can we trust them to treat the Palestinians well?

US aid for Israel should NOT be unconditional. If Israel wants to be a truly "Jewish" state, they should have to do it without US aid.

The quotes from that article honestly give me pause in my assesment of some of Israel's positions.

Most Arab- Israelis support terrorism. As a security measure, I would support the legislation. However, if there is normalization, I agree that the legislation is wrong, and I would insist upon framing it as an emergency measure, to be reviewed biennially.......

"The debate goes to the heart of Israel's existential contradiction: How can it be both a Jewish state and a democratic state?"

Israelis have a difficult choice to make. Which is more important? A legitimate democracy or a strictly Jewish state?

If Israelis choose a true democracy then legal discrimination against Israeli Arabs is not an option. On the other hand, if Israelis choose a strictly Jewish state then they shouldn't pretend Israel is a truly democratic state.
