That's a very good article. At least I think it is. I thought the action in congress was remarkably craven, even for congress, and I expect them to be craven.

Cohen says legislators didn't have the guts to stand up for a little girl in CA. The little girl didn't bring the suit - her rather weird father did.

Cohen's remarks suggest that there are religious skeptics and outright non-believers in congress and that they should have been more honest in reacting to the court's decision.

One might gather that believers in congress stood up for what they believe in but non-believers did not. Should I infer from this that non-believers can't be counted on in a crunch? Are they more likely to be cowards than believers? Perhaps they were too in love with their positions to tell the truth? Perhaps there is such a thing as political suicide? Perhaps the percentage of believers (nominal or otherwise) in the country, is greater than among the chatty classes on SI?

No personal offense intended, Karen. We disagree on much of this but I accept your positions as sincere and thoughtfully formed.
