Scooter, I just had 3 tons of blue field stone delivered to my home. I'm going to be building a small retaining wall ( dry not cemented) with steps and I have a couple of questions for you. The wall will be approx 2 1/2 - 3 feet tall. Can I make it approx. 1 foot in depth (thick, that is) or should it be thicker? I may use mortar to hold the top layer of stones in place. Good idea or bad? Should I use some sort of gravel behind the wall or just back fill with dirt. I'll probably angle the wall back a little bit (into the higher ground). Good idea or not necessary to do so? When mortaring the steps, do you know if your guys add something to the concrete to help prevent it from cracking in the cold of winter? Does the concrete base (under each step) have to be thick or would an inch be sufficient? Thanks. I'm sure I'll have more questions as the weeks go by. I'm doing the digging by hand. It may take me a little while... -Doug
