Bill, Re: "AMD looks like it may well go vertical itself with it's forays into Mobos...that can extend to boxes easily."

If they want to become another Apple, they had better get the marketing staff behind it. Right now, compared to Apple (and most everyone else, for that matter), their marketing is a joke. Having said that, the vertical approach would kill them.

It is much more likely that AMD will just fade away. The scope of its business has shrunk to just microprocessors and flash memory. Both businesses are floundering and it is hard to see how AMD will survive as an independent company.

Bill,

If AMD went into becoming a box maker, I believe that would be a very stupid idea. Remember it is about profit margins; not volume. Also remember that AMD has only a finite amount of resources. Instead, AMD should focus on the Hammer and make sure it is released ASAP. Additionally, AMD should ensure that they can fab this uP in sufficient quantities. AMD does not need another K6 fiasco.

Back in 1995/6, it was rumored that TI was interested in NexGen (a company that merged with AMD).
