I don't know anything about that issue, but my superficial reaction is that the Girl Scouts should be allowed to exclude boys, the Boy Scouts should be allowed to exclude girls, all private clubs should be allowed to exclude whomever they want to, and so should this private golf club.

I think the usual standard for "discrimination" of an unfair kind in situations when women have been excluded from clubs has been when the woman is professionally disadvantaged because a significant amount of business goes on there.

If the NCWO doesn't think the Girl Scouts should be required to admit boys, I'm not impressed with their ire about that golf club, but don't they have a legal right to call for a boycott of anyplace they think is discriminating against them, and try to persuade people they're right?

I wouldn't, on the basis of what I know, join the boycott. (I admit I don't know much about it.)

I assume women play in the tournament and that the club has no objection to that.

And I notice I'm not one of the ones whose biography you would like to see!

I didn't put me on the list, either!

Actually, I would love to see some autobiographical sketches by you! And by many others from SI, too.

The off- the- top- of- my- head list was of people I consider especially literarily gifted posters who "identify" as "writers," though. I see you and me and kholt and X and lots of others in a different category when we write posts on SI. We're all articulate people who can say what we want to competently, but we're not self-conscious stylists.

The ones I mentioned are real "writers," imo. People with special literary talent. Ish would deny it, I'm sure, and would definitely deny that he writes with the intention of writing with an individual, literarily striking, style, but I wouldn't believe him, lol. He's an original and I figure he knows it.

Another "original," a gifted writer, of a different kind, is Tastes Like Chicken. Haven't followed him recently, but he's very smart and funny and a writer in the creative sense I'm talking about.

SI has subcultures, I'm sure I've missed lots of good writing going on in subcultures I don't hang out in.

The Autobiographical Sketches thread was just a conceit, and isn't going to happen, but if it did, would you, in fact, have contributed?

And whose sketches would you like to see there, if there were a there there?

Laz, I was just talking to N about the golf club, and he asked me what I would think about holding the tournament there if those excluded from the club were blacks or Jews or Catholics.

What would you think?

The National Council of Women's Organizations has demanded that Augusta admit some women. Augusta has refused. The NCWO has said it will pressure the sponsors of the tournament to get them to pressure Augusta and, if necessary, withdraw sponsorship...

Do you support NCWO's actions?

I think the club should award honorary memberships to Margaret Thatcher and Phyllis Schlafly, and stick their tongues out.
