Laz, I was just talking to N about the golf club, and he asked me what I would think about holding the tournament there if those excluded from the club were blacks or Jews or Catholics. What would you think? I agree, as I said, that the private club has a right to exclude anybody they want to. Moving right along... Now: If I were Ms. Tigress Woods, and were invited to play in a tournament held at a club that wouldn't let me or any black join because of our race, I'm pretty sure I'd decline to play in that tournament. I'm not arguing abstractions, I'm saying I just wouldn't, I am pretty darn sure, feel much like playing in a tournament at their club. And I'd think quite a few of my friends might feel the same discomfiture at the prospect. And some of their friends might, too. So please do this thought-experiment for me: Do you have any problem at all with me, Tigress Woods, and my friends, deciding to skip that tournament and wait for one held at a venue that makes me feel more welcome and less uncomfortable? Why should a Tigress Woods play in a tournament on a Sunday at a venue that wouldn't let her, or any other black or female, near the links on Tuesday?, except to mow the grass, or caddy. Why should a Tigress Woods not let her feelings and those of her friends be known to the sponsors of the tournament? Whoa, I'm reconsidering about not participating in that boycott. Remind me again why I shouldn't! Is it maybe a civil right under the constitution to be sponsored by Coke? g
