Just buy palominos. They are cheap right now.

Re: Have you seen any of the lower speed Tbred chips advertised anywhere?

Not as loose chips - I think AMD has a couple million Palominos yet to sell. The Palomino's larger die works better with most current heat sinks, so they're probably easier to integrate into systems right now, anyway.

Most of the Athlon notebooks currently in stores are using lower speed Thoroughbreds, for whatever that's worth.

I picked up an HP ZE1210 today, as a gift for a niece. It uses the XP 1400+, which I'm pretty sure is a Thoroughbred. I started it up while plugged in, and "system" showed 1200 mhz. I pulled the plug out and it showed 432mhz. I clicked on word to start it up and quickly checked system again as word was opening, and it had poped back up to 1200. In a couple of seconds it dropped back down again.

PowerNow really works beautifully.

Overall, it's a very nice notebook, at a very, very, nice price. It's only 1.3 inches thick, even with DVD and CD-RW, but has no floppy (who needs when you have CD-RW?).

Modem, Ethernet, and USB ports are all easy to get to. The screen seemed brighter than some I've seen. Installing office Professional and watching a DVD didn't phase it a bit, but it did get quite warm when it was simultaneously running the hard drive and the CD/DVD to install office.

It's listed as being only a little lighter than my trusty Compaq Athlon4 notebook, but it felt a lot lighter - maybe because it was so thin. It has a bunch of led lit buttons and status lights that look great.
