I am sorry Joe was smeared with homosexuality- although I am even more sorry it was considered a smearable offense. One way to tell when campaigns like this have crossed the line is when they lump together all that they despise, for example, if you're a communist you must be a pervert, as well. No differentiation. just as i am sorry communism is considered that kind of offense. Speaking of differentiation, I imagine that many Americans who were enamored of communism in those days were idealists who were loyal to their country and there were other communists who were spies for a foreign country, traitors. Just as the McCarthyites didn't differentiate, we err if we don't acknowledge that there were some traitors and foreign agents acting to undermine our country.
