The George W. Bush Bob-and-Weave
A BUZZFLASH EDITORIAL
Maybe we're all the slow ones out here in the Heartland of America.
That's what the Bush Administration is counting on. That, and the
continued inaction of the Senate Democrats in seriously investigating
an administration run by role models for corrupt business practices.
We have Harvey Pitt, the former consiglieri for the accounting firms
accused of fraud, heading an investigation of those firms -- and
promising to conduct an unbiased investigation of Dick Cheney's
Halliburton accounting sleights of hand. That would have been a bit like
putting Al Capone's legal counsel in charge of investigating whether or
not Capone committed income tax invasion.
Then Larry Thompson, longtime Bush family court retainer and legal
defender of businesses charged with corruption, is appointed to root
out corruption in business. He should know. He was on the Board of
Directors of Providian Financial Corp., which itself was charged with a
huge financial scam. (See story.news.yahoo.com

course, Larry, like his colleagues in the Bush administration -- and Dim
Son himself -- still ended up with hundreds of thousands of dollars
(actually millions) in profit.
You'd think that would be enough to get the likes of the Senate
Democrats to hold vigorous, aggressive hearings about the financial
scandals that the Bush administration is transparently trying to cover
up. But the Senate "investigations" are moving along at the languid,
sluggish pace of a steamy summer day in Louisiana. The Senate
Democrats don't have the cojones to hold the Bush administration
accountable for its corruption. Remember, it's not the size of the dog in
the fight; it's the size of the fight in the dog.
As we noted in a previous BuzzFlash editorial, the Senate Democrats keep getting scared
off every time that our battery-operated V.P. dog snarls.
What the Democrats in the Senate don't understand is that when they cower in their
corners, afraid of vigorously investigating the corrupt town bully, they aren't just letting
things take their natural course; in reality, they are enablers.
Take the most recent blatant Bush bob-and-weave.
At this hastily arranged news conference last week, Bush basically dismissed any
implication that he was guilty of insider trading and other shenanigans when he was a
director of the board of Harken Oil. He claimed he had been exonerated by the SEC. But
Bush won't allow the SEC to release the files on the investigation surrounding his alleged
violations of the law, particularly regarding the most serious charge: that he was guilty of
insider trading.
Given that the SEC investigation was clouded by the fact that the Chairman of the SEC,
at the time, and its general counsel both had extremely close Bush family ties -- and that
Bush himself was never interviewed -- it would seem that there might be a need to clear
the air, so to speak. But Bush claims he was cleared of all charges, (which is not exactly
true either) without allowing the media to examine the records of the investigation. The
White House says it won't ask the SEC to release the files, and Bush lapdog Harvey Pitt
says that he won't release them.

At the news conference last week, Bush was asked about a questionable Harken Oil
business practice, one of the kinds he is now denouncing. Bush claimed he couldn't
remember the specifics, and that one would have to read the Harken Oil board minutes.
After the news conference, of course, the White House staff said that they had no right
to ask Harken Oil to release the board minutes. Of course, you guessed it, Harken Oil has
said, since Bush's first race for governor, that it would not release the board minutes in
question.
Are the Senate Democrats going to let America down and continue to enable the Bush
administration?
If you know a crime has been committed, don't you have an obligation to call the police?
Or in this case to issue subpoenas?
How long will the Senate Democrats let the Bush administration run the nation like a mob
family? After all, it's got its same group of Bush family loyalists running the investigations
of its own alleged corrupt practices.
The Bush family has always, as in a Royal Court, valued loyalty to the Bushes over loyalty
to the country. That is simply not disputable.
As with the mob, the Bush loyalists know they will be rewarded for their service with
prestigious appointments or opportunities to cash in after government service. Just look at
how the thugs who prevented democracy from being carried out in Florida were rewarded.

And if you get caught engaging in illegal activity, you can always expect a pardon. Just
remember Iran-Contra.
The Bushes know how to keep people in line.
Which means that the only way we'll get the truth is if the Senate does its job and
demands justice by carrying out a real inquiry -- and not just going through the motions.
For most of his adult life, those people around him enabled Bush's alcoholism. Now the
Democratic Senate is enabling the corporate corruption problem of his administration by
not using their Constitutional powers to demand the truth.
If this sounds harsh, let's remember that one of the key figures in the Enron scandal,
Thomas "Enron" White, is serving as Secretary of the Army. Yes, a man who oversaw one
of the Enron divisions at the heart of the company's malfeasance is the CEO for the men
and women who serve our country in the Army. It is a betrayal of our Armed Forces. It is
a grave injustice to them and to our country.
When will the Senate Democrats stand up to the big lie and stand up for America?
Sunday talk show lip service does not meet the needs of the time or of the country. Stop
looking at the polls and start looking at the future of America.
Look into the soul of democracy, what makes us great as a nation, take a deep breath,
and do the patriotic thing: hold the Bush administration accountable for its misdeeds.
