Gottfried, I think they erroneously reported July's numbers for June. A sufficiently motivated person would go back to June's news release and find June's numbers. I, on the other hand, have to go to work to earn a living. I sure can't do it in the stock market.

I do think that the moving avg would be right, if the right numbers for June are used.

G.,

Here's the VLSI Equipment report...
Note that they're forecasting Capacity Utilization to continue rising this month as well as the BtB (partially because Billings fall while bookings continue to rise).

Note that the text of this release is primarily about Worldwide Equipment, but also has a paragraph talking about chips. I didn't read the SBN story but perhaps the writer got confused with both types of data in one Press Release...

VLSI RESEARCH INC
June?s Semiconductor Equipment Book-to-Bill Ratio at 1.24

San Jose, CA: Worldwide equipment billings amounted to $2.56B in June and bookings were at $3.17B, according to the July 15th edition of VLSI Research Inc?s Industry Pulse Pro®. The
resulting book-to-bill ratio was 1.24?. Equipment billings for June were 3% below May?s level, while bookings were only 2% higher than the previous month. Absolute bookings levels are still very low because equipment customers remain indecisive about expansion. Several factors are
behind this:

(1) Weak chip pricing resulting from a slowing electronics demand occurring at the same time that front-end utilization rate has increased. Front-end utilization rate was at 87.7% in June and is forecast to increase to 88.7% in July;

(2) The financial accounting crisis in the United States is causing many chip makers to forego spending to protect their cash flows.

Of the total billings in June, $1.53B were for wafer processing equipment, $0.58 for test and related equipment, $0.13 for assembly, and $0.32 for service and spares. VLSI Research?s forecast for July calls for billings of $2.4B and bookings of $3.3B that results in a B:B ratio of 1.38.

VLSI Research?s preliminary data for June indicates IC bookings at $11.2B and IC billings at $9.5B, yielding a B:B ratio of 1.18 on a three-month average basis. The IC billings represent the average of WSTS sales data for April and May and VLSI Research?s estimate for June. The IC B:B ratio is expected to move up to 1.50 during July, when bookings are forecast at $14.5 and billings are at about $9.7B.

The following table summarizes our latest findings.
