I worked at a marina up in Tahoe when I was in High School. We were the closest marina to all of the touristy places, so they brought all the dead bodies to us. These two guys were out in a little mini raft and the wind whipped up and was pushing them out pretty far. They decided to abandon their raft and try to swim to shore where their wives were watching and waiting. The swells on lake tahoe can get pretty big and the wind was coming down off the mountains and these guys didn't have a chance swimming against that. They found them in about 40ft of water holding on to each other. It was one of the more profoundly sad memories that I have. Remember, their wives were watching from the shore.

In subsequent years, I would often go out with the coast guard or sheriff to help them on "retrievals". Believe it or not, the grappling hook was the preferred tool.
