Thanks for posting that, E. I'm going to try and catch it. The "refrigerator mother" theory was still operating when I was studying psychology in college. Thank goodness it's been shot down. Though the deleterious effect of a "crazy" mother on the psychological development of a child is very real, as we know.

And I love "Houston Medical" too.

I just spent an hour on the GWB thread and feel as though I need a shower. Yuck.

Thanks for posting that E. I have a close relative who is autistic, and his mother is the antithesis of the old "refrigerator mother" in the textbooks of yesterday.

Time magazine had a big cover story on autism in May. One theory is that the genetic underpinnings seem to be most prevalent in the "geek" culture of people who are particularly strong in math and science. Silicon Valley apparently has a disproportionately high incidence rate. My nephew has two parents very strong in math and science as well.

That is one mystery that I would love to see unraveled in my lifetime.

It amazes me the shrinks got away with this sort of thing for so long. Ordinary problems and neuroses can be the result of self-brainwashing, misperception, and incorrect thinking, but when you get to the serious malfunctions like schizophrenia and autism, they must be due to organic brain disorders.
