Given that the last 5 years has really been representative of the long term trend in the US equities market, that's an excellent observation.

I am curious. What is her 5 year return for the 5 years ending in 1999?

Ben, buy and hold should be called buy and hope. Or buy and hopeless. <g> Good for your wife making those positive returns. I think she could venture into short term, high quality bonds to boost it, but most 401Ks don't contain suce a critter.
