KT, thanks for the suggestion. My 403b at Vanguard has 64 choices and I actually do have some in short term bonds (6.0% for the past year -- not like the precious metals fund I have a much bigger chunk in though!); my wife's 401k only has 8 and I just checked -- the only bond fund in the Total Market Bond fund (VBMFX), which is where she has 8% of her $$. That has done pretty well for the past couple of years (7.2% past year and 7.3% for past 5 years). Of the eight funds, that's the only positive one for the past year save the mm fund. She actually wrote her co. asking for more choices, but I know they would have to pay more for the next increment (to 16 funds I suspect) and so probably won't. Her previous plan only had 3 choices so at least it's moving in the right direction. My plan at UW has about 200 choices (and I'm still hoping for a self-directed 403b at a brokerage, silly me!).
