VERY interesting statistic. However, isn't it conceivable that although the S&P500 rose 20% during the same period of time, mutual funds performed relatively poorly due to the volume of redemptions from having to sell their winners to cover redemptions, which caused them to lose out on the S&P500 gains? It would be interesting to see mutual fund performance during that time.
