Both my cousin and her husband and most of their friends are registered Democrats. They don't like Bush, they like their guns, and they intensely dislike environmentalists.

That seems to me an unlikely mix. I don't know too much about the politics of the area. The people I talk to in Tucson are all transplants. Disproportionately New York Jews, Democrats, of course. My father is a lifelong Republican who would fit in well with the boyz on RWET. He's always cursing environmentalists. Red squirrels this and red squirrels that. He's sure that the environmentalists will destroy the Tucson economy. He's very proud of the area's work in astronomy and has been just livid at the delays in building new facilities. When I worked at EPA, I got him a sweatshirt with the EPA logo on it. I'm sure he's never worn it.

I don't know people who own guns, there or here. I hardly know anyone who is a member of any party. We're all independents.

Pretty clear indication they didn't know what they were doing for quite awhile.

I think that's a tad off. I think they were just optimizing different things. For the longest time there wasn't a big fire problem. Now there is. They weren't optimized for fire when it wasn't a problem. They were worried about deforestation and every tree was worth saving to make up for the loss of forests elsewhere. All other things being equal, trees ARE good, after all. If the drought continues, we may end up cutting them all down.
