<<In steering a small boat before a heavy gale, don't look
back -- it may disconcert you.>>

Hehe, so true. Back in the 70s I went to Canada in October with a pharmacist and a dentist. Both were about 20 years older than I was but real rookies in the woods and water. We went out in a 14' Lund with a 20 horse motor on Lake of the Woods, a big lake. The pharmacist shot a buck that I field dressed but it still overloaded the boat a bit. While we were hunting the wind kicked up and the lake got ugly.

Heading back to camp I tried to hold the boat between swells when the dentist turned around and told me to slow down, we were taking water over the bow and he couldn't swim. I mentioned we were also taking water over the stern and swimming didn't matter because a person would freeze before swimming to shore. Oh, and BTW, you might want to start bailing. That gave them something to do.

I cut into a long cove and dropped the nimrods off at another camp, took the boat to where we were staying and drove over and picked them up.
