You can feel mighty small at a time like that.

My husband and I used to have a large boat.
Water line was 45' with an overall length of 54', and 4 levels high. We were returning from Catalina Island when we encountered 20' swells. Catalina Island is 24 miles off the coast of southern California.

Everything that could fall over did. I remember sitting on the sofa in the salon and looking out the window. All I could see was a wall of water. Up in the pilot house the captains chair went over several times and finally remained prone on the floor. It took all my husband had to maintain his grip on the wheel.

The swells were so high and strong, water was pouring in through the hatch to the flybridge. I remember crawling to the bar and opening a bottle of Tanguery and drinking it straight. I was frightened to death. Our boat felt no larger than a dinghy.

That is when you learn respect for Mother Nature and the big blue ocean.
