Al >Dow PE's are around 16 times on the average.

Who worked out the figures? Kudlow? Or maybe Bob Pisani? Or maybe Maria Bartiromo?

Do they include directors' stock options and other forms of remuneration or are those items still "off balance sheet"?

Are the earnings last year's, this year's or next year's --- or just a thumbsuck?

Is the accounting based on GAAP or some other "standard"?

If you look at this link you will see the PE on the S&P500 for YE March 2002 and based on reported earnings was 36.7. Quite a big difference from the figure you mentioned.

Fact is, I don't think anyone can believe anything any more. That's why the only way one can be sure that we are dealing with something "real" is when the purge is over and many guys are in jail and many (more) companies are insolvent. And, as I see it, that hasn't yet happened.

>Others believe the Iraq thing needs to be settled one way or another first.

What about Israel/Palestinians, Syria, Iran, N.Korea etc, etc and who says Afghanistan is over? In my opinion, the global uncertainty and the fear of the US being involved in various wars is only just beginning.

Aprops gold and gold stocks, I can see the present drift still lasting quite a few more months.
