Interesting numbers with SP500 down 26% YTD in 2002:

In the worst market year of the Great Depression, 1931, large company stocks fell 43.34%, according to data from Ibbotson Associates. But that kind of performance is certainly rare. Neither of the bear market years of 1973 or 1974 produced that magnitude of loss; the worse performance was the 26% loss of 1974.
