Intelligent people do stupid things all the time. You say those involved were not stupid- yet that is no proof against stupid actions. I think you have muddled those two issues. And of course mistakes are often very stupid indeed- no matter who performs them. Smart and stupid people are both capable of making stupid mistakes.

Perhaps this charge was one of those grand stupid blunders by intelligent people.

(of course you'd have a hard time writing a heroic poem about a stupid mistake. But no doubt a really intelligent person could do it :-)
