Yeah, that is a serious issue, backward compatibility. That and the processor issue may be the endgame.

I guess that's the bet.

I don't think the hub differentiates Apple enough. I guess it depends on how many people adopt a lifestyle of carrying around little digital boxes. How tied do we want to be to these things. Some people love 'em. But if that's what matters I don't need a fast computer to access an iPod. Why should I upgrade at all? Ever?

But I don't think people will go with Apple if Moto and IBM loose the processor war even if Apple has better connectivity. It gets back to the... dreaded Beta/VHS argument...

For a long time it didn't look like it mattered, a small differential that could be made up, but with Apple stuck at 1 GHz and Moto's processor division going down the tubes, when you can buy a 2.53 Pentium or a Top end Athlon for $211 AND their new processor's just around the corner, with ever faster buses and RAM, it's looking a bit grim. You can argue IBM but without AltaVec, PPCs on desktops are REALLY going to lag.

By the way, as I was using my friends new 933 I was thinking "this thing isn't all that fast." I'm now thinking I can wait this out. Been using OSX at home now for awhile now and I'm still not all that impressed, I'm hating the beach ball effect and that damn Dock. I've got my OSX customized so it's livable but I still hate the elusive dodging trash.

If you read this thread over at dealmac:

dealmac.com

and some of the other threads there, people are pretty discouraged by Apple right now, something like when Emilio was king. There were over 1000 comments on Slashdot about MacWorld, mostly negative, no new G4s, .mac and $129 for OSX 10.2 which I find to be a rip off. Maybe it's temporary. Apple's been on a cliffhanger a bunch of times. The next pro machines may be critical. Or maybe processors will become less important and video cards will rule like that guy that runs nVidia thinks.

What a soap opera! The next two months will be interesting to say the least. When those new G4s hit...
