Fed Silent on Market Rumors of Meeting

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve declined to comment on Wednesday on rumors it may act to stem the global tide of equity market losses, in keeping with its usual stance in times of market turbulence.

"It is our practice not to comment on rumors," said Fed spokeswoman Susan Stawick.

As stock markets across Europe have followed the lead of the United States' markets in dropping, rumors previously seen in the currency markets that the Fed may be considering an emergency meeting have swirled in other financial markets.

The Fed's Open Market Committee last cut rates between regularly scheduled meetings on Sept. 17, 2001, days after the attacks on New York and Washington.
