Re: Hammer 2400+ in September

Could be a typo, and it should be 3400+, or that periodic speculation that Barton from UMC would be 64-bit, perhaps internally only, and would use the old Socket A, like the 386SX was 32/16 bit, could be true.

Personally, doubt it.

A 64-bit hammer that used an external memory controller would have considerably lower performance, but being limited to 4 gig of physical RAM wouldn't be a problem for most users, at least not this year.

My guess is that, either the story is completely unfounded, or it's just a typo and a handfull of hammers might ship in September.

But thanks for the link!

Andreas, Re: Hammer in September

FWIW:

Roughly a month ago, I got an unprecedented call from one of my vendors...asking me if I was wanting to buy anything. The fellow that called went on to discuss the lowered prices of major components. It seems that business was THAT slow! Of course the handwriting was on the wall about Q2 results at that time.

While this fellow was on the phone, I asked him when they would have the 64 bit Hammmer for sale, they do sell a lot of AMD processors...his reply, "In a couple of months". I have no idea if he really KNEW anything or was just taking a salesman's stab in the dark. If he really KNEW something, what he said would tend to confirm the content of your post.

Like I said...FWIW.

Have a good day!

Kindest Regards,
CrazyMan

Andreas,

It could be a limited "pilot" release, which I speculated in the past would be a great idea. The advantages:

- chips in hands of a lot of hands of hardware enthusiasts could uncover potential bugs in the chip
- AMD can process a lot more Hammer wafers and sell resulting chips in December / January timeframe at much lower risk, since it would be after 3 month "pilot" of the chip.
- allows wider testing of x86-64 software
- public testing of x86-64 software will allow earlier GA launch

Joe

Hammer 2400+ in September

YES! I heard the same rumor. The Hammers will be available exclusively through Dell. ;-)
