wbmw,

LOL. Sort of like a Microsoft beta release?

There are definitely differences between hardware and software, with software, you can just release an update. But I am talking about something a little different. Suppose AMD sells $25M of these "beta" chips and something goes wrong (which is becoming increasingly unlikely with CPUs). The potential liability of AMD is in the $25M ballpark, and it can be easily absorbed. Successful conclusion of this "pilot" period will allow AMD to sell let's say 200M worth of Hammer chips, which would have been risky for an initial release, but after the pilot, it is a lot less risky.

200M liability would be a lot harder to absorb, so with absence of the "pilot", AMD would have to sell less than say 200M worth of Hammers, even that much is available, just to lower the risk.

Joe

Are they going to ship logic analyzers and ITPs to all these enthusiasts as well?

They have to the Linux guys. One of my friends has a cool Hammer gizmo.

Neil.
