I posted at bearforum a few days ago about the VIX. Below is the chart which is a few days old but is stil valid.

Note the difference between the last VIX spike and this one. The last one was a sharp rise with almost no corrective pattern. This one is very constructive with lots of base building. Parabolic moves often collapse but they don't collapse as easily when they are constructive. The current VIX chart allows for a spike much higher due to the base building so I wouldn't necessarily compare it to previous highs.
