Pravin, Re: "If IBM's DB2 engineers like Opteron's performance, they had to have been comparing it to something. It's also safe to assume that those same engineers had access to the fastest Itanium 2 prototypes (perhaps those based on IBM's EXA chipset). If I had to take a wild guess, Opteron might very well be doing some slam dunks against IA-64 behind closed doors. Whether that's the case or not remains to be seen."

*If* that's the case, then I see no reason why Opteron wouldn't be the next preferred server processor for all segments. If performance is truly that stellar, then Intel is years behind with IA-32, and the porting effort for IA-64 will not be compelling enough to take them any farther. As long as AMD could move products out the door, I would recommend they change their whole business to shipping nothing but high end processors, with much better margins, and volumes within their manufacturing capabilities.

But in my personal opinion, I don't see how performance can be that high. David Berlind is likely being fed marketing propaganda from the Hammer Hype Engine.

The topic of db engines and 64 bit processors came up a few months back on the SUNW thread. See Message 17384309 and subsequent discussion. Somebody challenges rudedog in some of his handwaving later on, but it's sort of interesting.
