Joan,
<<The average person does not have any idea what is going on.>><<I have two friends that had owned IBM for years>>
Talked to my daughter this am, she had a little get together last night with 3 couples in the neighborhood. One was going to invest in IBM, "Its at such a GOOD price", all we going to put money into the market, "Bottom is in, oversold". Last Thur. I had convinced my daughter & son-in-law to finally take their money out of the market and put it into something safe. Last night they just sat there and listened, not saying a word, being very glad they did what they did.
<<Capital gains>> My sister and brother-in-law, who's retired from AT&T had a ton of stock in all the baby bells (from the split up)& Lucent. In Aug. of 199? when the news first came out of accounting shenanigans in Lucent (stock was around $70/$80) my sister called. I told her if it was me I'd unload (or at least sell CC's). It started to go down, husband didn't want to sell, have to pay too much on capital gains, rode it down to $40's and finally sold, still held on to the bells, too much capital gains. Every time they bitch about loosing all the money I just tell them, "Hey, at least you're not paying any capital gains." :-)
