you can set it to refuse pop-up windows or to open them in the background.

Opera rocks! It's fast as all get-out and has some nice features not found in any other major browser. The adware (free) version works fine, but since it has become my primary browser I went ahead and purchased the Windows and Linux versions.

It does fall short of Netscape as far as mail and news goes, but using other programs for these purposes is certainly no worse than using IE and Outlook.
